The careers support at John Paul College aligns with our commitment to nurturing well-rounded, confident, and successful students. We guide students in exploring vocational interests, selecting the right subjects, and navigating the transition from school to further education or the workforce.
Our Careers Hub provides links to information, resources, and current events in career development. Whether students are seeking part-time employment or preparing for full-time careers, the Careers team are ready to help with resumes, cover letters, and interview preparation.
Careers support is available to all students from Year 7 to 12, with a structured and progressive program that becomes more personalised from Year 10. At this critical stage, we provide guidance to help students make informed decisions about their future pathways, ensuring they are well-prepared to navigate the options ahead.
In Year 10, each student undertakes Morrisby Career profiling and is offered career counselling to work through their results and apply this learning to future possible career pathways and VCE subject selections. These career conversations help them identify their interests and strengths and create pathways plans.
Our Careers team are available to meet with each student to discuss university or TAFE options, as well as different pathways available after graduation. Career conversations cover program choices for Years 11 and 12 and transition strategies for further education, training, or work. Each year the Year 11 cohort visits the Melbourne Careers Expo at the Exhibition centre to seek further information, ideas and ask questions directly to tertiary providers.
Work experience provides an invaluable chance to explore an industry firsthand to help make informed decisions. It is ideal for students curious about a specific field or those deciding between multiple career paths. At John Paul College, work experience is optional and is scheduled to take place during school holidays. However, exceptions are made for students accepted into selective professional programs with set dates, such as those at Melbourne Zoo, the Police Force, or in Nursing.
Ahead of important tertiary application dates and subject selections for VCE, VM, and VET, this annual event is a valuable opportunity for students and parents. Representatives from TAFEs, universities and private colleges offer advice and answer questions. Staff from all Learning Areas will also provide subject area information, supporting students in making informed decisions about their future beyond school.
Students have access to a comprehensive library of TAFE and university guides, job application advice, and career information. The Careers Office is located in our Resource Centre.Visit the Careers Office or email us at careerhub@jpc.vic.edu.au
