The Year 12 VCE VM students have been immersing themselves in hands-on learning experiences that connect their studies to real-world issues. During a visit to Melbourne Zoo, students explored potential wildlife and environmental conservation projects for their Unit 4 Personal Development Skills. The excursion offered valuable insights into animal care and conservation practices, emphasising the importance of protecting local environments. Arabella reflected, “It is nice to know that all the animals in captivity at Melbourne Zoo are treated well. The female seal called 'Bella' was found at Frankston Beach underweight, and the Zoo took her in. Now she is thriving. We should all look after our beaches to help animals like 'Bella.’”
Students also participated in the Road to Zero program, engaging in interactive activities and collaborating to create pedestrian and bike rider road safety campaigns. Skye shared, “Since recently getting my licence, the Road to Zero program gave me important information about being on the road and understanding potential risks. It was fun to work with others to create a road safety campaign.”
At Skye Lodge, students conducted interviews with allocated residents to create visual biographies. These biographies will be presented to Skye Lodge as part of the John Paul College Art Show, showcasing the students’ creativity and personal connections with the community.
These experiences have provided meaningful learning opportunities, allowing students to develop teamwork, creativity, and personal growth while engaging with significant social and environmental issues.
