Creating memories and building leaders at the Year 11 Retreat

15 August 2025

As part of the Religious Education program, Year 11 students recently participated in a one-day Retreat designed to support their personal and spiritual growth. The Retreat encouraged students to reflect on their faith journey, build stronger connections with their peers, and develop the qualities of leadership that will guide them into their final year of secondary schooling.

Held in two House groups - Chaminade House and D’Houet House, and Olsen House and Turner House - the program offered a variety of experiences, including meditation, prayer, painting, team-building activities, walking, and reflective writing.

The Year 11 retreat was an opportunity to create lasting memories and grow in not just spiritual growth, but also my personal growth too. The day allowed me to step back, reflect on my journey so far, and think about the type of leader I want to be in Year 12.

The activities encouraged students to pause, connect, and consider the important role they will play as senior leaders of the John Paul College community. One of the highlights was creating House banners.

One of my favourite parts of the day was painting our House banners. It brought everyone together, gave us a chance to collaborate creatively, and reminded me how fun and rewarding it can be to work as a team and share an experience as a whole.

Throughout the day, students engaged in reflective writing and team-building exercises that challenged them to think about their leadership style and how they can contribute positively to their community.

It was an experience that was both enriching and illuminating, where we participated in many team-building and leadership activities and engaged in a time of self-reflection to consider how we can contribute positively as senior leaders. I really appreciated the chance to pause and think about my own growth and the ways I can support others.

Creating the banners was a wonderful way to connect with my peers, have fun, and reflect on our shared journey. The process of working together, laughing, and supporting each other made the day memorable and meaningful, and it’s something I will always look back on fondly.

The Retreat provided students with a meaningful pause from their usual routines, helping them reflect, collaborate, and prepare for the leadership roles they will embrace in Year 12.
