Celebration and reflection at the College Assembly

29 July 2025

The Term 3 College Assembly was a celebration of student achievement, leadership, and community spirit at John Paul College.

College Captains Jasmine S and Rahul S welcomed students and staff to Term 3, noting that although it’s the shortest term, it’s packed with events, challenges, and opportunities. They reflected on how the College motto for 2025, “One heart, one mind - together we thrive,” has come to life this year - from major events like Mission Action Day and the Athletics Carnival to everyday acts of kindness and service across the College.

They celebrated the impressive $15,594.70 raised during Mission Action Day, thanked all who contributed, and congratulated students on completing their mid-year exams. They also praised the success of the College production, The Little Mermaid, and encouraged all year levels to get involved in the upcoming House Music event in Week 5.

Their final message to the College community was to approach the term with consistency, connection and compassion - reminding everyone that when we move with one heart and one mind, we truly thrive together.

From early auditions in 2024 to the final curtain call, students poured their energy into every part of the show - on stage, backstage, and in the band. Mia spoke of the resilience and teamwork it took to bring the story to life, saying the late nights and long rehearsals were all worth it.

She thanked the teachers for their unwavering support and praised the welcoming, creative space they fostered. Mia also encouraged younger students to get involved, saying the experience built confidence, friendships and lifelong memories.

Thanks to all who came along, supported the show and contributed to fundraising for the 2026 Arts Trip. The Little Mermaid was a true celebration of College spirit and student achievement.

Philippines Immersion Report

Year 10 students Oliver W and Abigail A reflected on their recent cultural immersion trip to the Philippines, which took place during the final week of Term 2 and the start of the holidays.

Oliver spoke about the confronting realities of the Philippines - a country shaped by a long history of colonialism, widespread poverty, and social inequality. He described the stark contrast between wealth and disadvantage and how deeply these issues affect everyday life for many Filipinos.

Abigail shared details of the group’s experiences, including time spent at De La Salle University, He Cares Mission, and visits to communities in Payatas. They also connected with the inspiring people at the House of Hope, which supports young girls through education, and Anawim, a home for abandoned elderly.

Each night, the group took time to reflect in silence, processing what they had seen and felt, and considering the impact of their experience. Both students spoke with honesty and insight, reminding the College community of the power of empathy, service and solidarity.

The assembly set a positive tone for the term ahead, celebrating student success while inspiring all to embrace the opportunities Term 3 has to offer.
