Australian Brain Bee Challenge – celebrating our Year 10 Psychology students

14 August 2025

The Australian Brain Bee Challenge is a prestigious national neuroscience competition run by the Australasian Neuroscience Society, with Round 2 in Victoria hosted in partnership with the University of Melbourne. Earlier this year, two of our Year 10 Psychology students - Kesean G and Zachary G - were successful in progressing to this highly competitive second round.

Held on 6 August 2025 at the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, Round 2 involved both an individual challenge and an optional team-based task, testing students’ understanding of brain anatomy, neurological disorders, and current research in the field. Although our students did not advance to the state final, their participation in this advanced round reflects a commendable level of scientific knowledge and engagement.

The day was fascinating. We watched creative group projects explaining brain functions and diseases, and toured the neuroscience labs, the DAX gallery, and the Anatomy Museum. I really enjoyed being surrounded by talented neuroscientists.

Zachary G, Year 10

The competition focused on advanced psychology, including neurodegenerative diseases, homeostasis, and brain function. Touring the labs and anatomy museum was an unbelievable experience and very insightful into university research. Overall, it was enlightening, and I would definitely do it again.

Kesean G, Year 10

Throughout the day, participants heard from leading researchers in neuroscience, including Professor Clare Parish, who shared her work on using human stem cells to repair brain damage. Students also toured the Florey Institute’s neuroscience laboratories at the University of Melbourne, where they explored cutting-edge research into stem cells and brain circuits, and engaged with PhD students and early career researchers about their projects and career journeys.

Kesean and Zachary represented the College with enthusiasm, curiosity, and professionalism. Their involvement in the Brain Bee Challenge stands as a testament to their dedication and intellectual rigour, and they are exemplary ambassadors of our learning community. We commend them for embracing this opportunity and encourage them to continue pursuing their passion for science and future pathways in STEM.
