As Year 10 students, we recently had the chance to get involved with the Community Companion Van, a program that supports people in Frankston who may be homeless or experiencing hardship. Every Wednesday evening, volunteers from JPC and surrounding schools collect leftover bread from Bakers Delight. On Thursdays, students and teachers help pack the bread, clothing, and other donations into bags ready for delivery. The van then travels through Frankston, offering food, essentials, and friendly conversation to anyone in need.
During our English lesson, we joined in by packing loaves of bread and baked goods. We put on gloves, wiped down tables, and carefully bagged each item. Seeing how something as simple as bread could make such a difference was truly eye-opening.
“Wow, there is so much bread in here!” – Kai O
The experience also gave us a new appreciation for the dedication of volunteers and the generosity of donors. Cooper S and Eamon C reflected on the deeper meaning of the activity:
“We felt compelled to help out our community knowing the struggles they face.” – Cooper S and Eamon C
Harlow S highlighted how the activity connected to our school values:
“It reminded us that small acts of service can make a big difference.” – Harlow S
Packing bread also reinforced the importance of teamwork and community spirit:
“Packing bread gave us a real sense of teamwork and the impact we can make in the community.” – Kian D and Archie F
Overall, the activity brought JPC’s values of service, community, and compassion to life. It reminded us that even small contributions can make a meaningful difference and gave us the chance to see care and compassion in action.
If you would like to help, donations of long-lasting, high-demand goods are always welcome to support the Companion Van and the people of Frankston who rely on it.
