Principal's Desk - Edition 4, Term 2

22 June 2026

As we complete the final week of Term 2 and begin our journey into Semester 2, an important and exciting milestone approaches for our students and families – the annual subject selection period. This is a significant time in the life of the College as it provides each student with the opportunity to shape their learning journey in ways that reflect their interests, strengths and future aspirations.

At John Paul College, we stress that subject selection is not simply as an administrative process but view it as a formative moment in a student’s growth. It is an invitation to reflect, to discern, and to engage in meaningful conversations about who they are becoming and what pathways may best support their flourishing. For our senior students in particular, these decisions can have a direct influence on post-school opportunities, while for younger students, they lay important foundations for future learning and engagement.

A key message I encourage all families to take on board is that subject selection should be a collaborative process. Students are best supported when they engage in open, honest and considered conversations with their parents and carers, as well as with their teachers. No one knows a student better than those who journey with them each day, at home and in the classroom, and it is through these shared discussions that students can gain clarity, confidence and direction.

Parents play a vital role in this process. Your insight into your child’s interests, motivations and long-term goals is invaluable. I encourage you to take the time to sit with your child, review the available options, and ask thoughtful questions: What subjects do you enjoy the most? Where do your strengths lie? What areas challenge you in positive ways? What are your emerging interests or possible career ideas? While it is natural to consider outcomes such as the ATAR score for senior students or career pathways, it is equally important to ensure that students are selecting subjects that will sustain their engagement, curiosity and wellbeing throughout their learning journey.

Teachers, too, are central to this process. They bring professional expertise, a deep understanding of curriculum, and daily observations of student learning. During the coming weeks, students will have opportunities to seek advice from their subject teachers, mentors and Pathways team. I strongly encourage students to take full advantage of this support. Thoughtful conversations with teachers can help students make informed decisions that are both ambitious and achievable.

Curriculum and Pathways Links

One of the great strengths of John Paul College is the breadth and diversity of our curriculum offering. We are proud to provide a wide range of subjects and pathways that cater to the varied interests, abilities and aspirations of our students. Our programs are designed to ensure that every student can find a pathway that is meaningful and relevant to them.

We recognise that there is no single definition of success, and no one-size-fits-all pathway beyond school. For some students, this may involve a traditional academic route through the VCE, with aspirations towards university study. For others, the VCE Vocational Major and VET programs may offer a more applied, hands-on approach that aligns strongly with their strengths and future goals. Each of these pathways is equally valued and respected within our community. Importantly, our commitment to multiple pathways reflects our belief in the dignity and potential of every learner. As a Catholic school, we are called to meet each young person where they are and to support them in becoming the best version of themselves. This means recognising diverse talents, academic, creative, practical and interpersonal, and providing opportunities for all students to experience success.

Our diverse subject offerings span the areas of English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Religious Education, the Arts, Technologies, Health and Physical Education, as well as a growing range of vocational options. Whether a student is drawn to the analytical thinking of Mathematics, the creativity of Visual Arts, the inquiry of Science, the practical skills of Technology, or the service orientation of Health and Human Development, there are rich opportunities to explore and extend their learning. The strength of our programmes lies not only in their breadth, but in the quality of teaching and the support systems that surround them. Our staff are deeply committed to knowing their students, to nurturing their individual pathways, and to providing guidance that is both affirming and challenging. The subject selection period is a time when this relational focus is particularly evident, as staff work alongside students and families to support informed and confident decision-making.

Engaging in the Process

In the coming weeks, families will receive detailed information about the subject selection process, including handbooks, timelines, and our information evening. I strongly encourage all families to engage fully with these opportunities. Attending information sessions, reviewing course materials and asking questions will ensure that you are well-equipped to support your child’s decisions. It is also important for students to approach this process with both openness and courage. Sometimes the most rewarding pathways are those that stretch us beyond our comfort zones. Equally, it is important to be realistic and to choose a balanced programme that supports both academic success and personal wellbeing. Striking this balance is key, and it is where the guidance of parents and teachers becomes particularly important.

As we accompany our students through this important decision-making process, we are reminded of our shared mission: to nurture young people who are confident, capable and compassionate, ready to contribute positively to the world around them. Subject selection is one step along this journey and is an opportunity for students to take ownership of their learning and shape their future with intention.

I thank our staff for the care and professionalism they bring to supporting students during this time, and I thank our families for the ongoing partnership that is so vital to student success. Together, we can ensure that each student at John Paul College is supported to choose a pathway that reflects their gifts, inspires their learning, and opens doors to future opportunities.
