Exploring Ancient Rome and Italian Culture

22 May 2026

Year 10 and Year 12 Italian students engaged in an enriching excursion designed to strengthen cultural awareness and deepen their understanding of the language and its historical roots. The experience highlighted the close connection between language, culture, and history, while also providing insight into the forces that have shaped the Western world over more than 2000 years.

As part of the program, students visited the exhibition Rome: Empire, Power, People at Melbourne Museum, where they explored the influence and legacy of ancient Roman society. This visit included a 30-minute workshop that further developed their historical understanding through interactive learning.

Following the museum experience, students travelled to Lygon Street, known for its strong Italian heritage. Here, they enjoyed a traditional Italian lunch and took part in a passeggiata - a relaxed walk offering a glimpse into contemporary Italian lifestyle and culture.

The excursion provided a valuable opportunity for students to connect classroom learning with real-world cultural experiences, deepening both linguistic and historical understanding.
