Honouring Stories of Service

24 March 2026

Year 12 Vocational Major (VM) students recently visited the Frankston RSL, where they had the privilege of meeting with local veterans and hearing powerful first-hand stories of courage, resilience and sacrifice.

Throughout the visit, students engaged in meaningful conversations that provided a deeper understanding of the realities of military service and the challenges faced both during and after conflict. The opportunity to connect personally with veterans brought history to life in a profound way, leaving a lasting impression on all involved.

Students were particularly struck by one veteran’s experience of joining the Navy at just 16 during the Vietnam War. They reflected on the immense responsibility he carried at such a young age, including leading others and making critical decisions in high-pressure situations. His recollections of strong teamwork and camaraderie were balanced by honest insights into the difficulties faced upon returning home, including the lack of recognition many veterans experienced at the time. These reflections deepened students’ respect and appreciation for those who have served.

Another veteran was described by students as engaging and passionate, with a genuine interest in sharing his story and responding thoughtfully to questions. His openness and willingness to reflect on both his service and life beyond it provided valuable perspective and encouraged students to think more deeply about the long-term impact of war.

Students also spoke about the lasting impression left by hearing personal accounts of the Vietnam War, noting how these stories offered insight beyond what can be learned in the classroom. The experience highlighted the importance of listening to and preserving these voices.

In Term 3, students will continue this important work by researching, writing and presenting biographies that honour the lives and service of these veterans. Through this process, they will ensure these powerful stories are remembered and shared with the wider community.
