Marking the Start of Lent

19 February 2026

Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday marked a meaningful beginning to the Lenten season for the College community.

Shrove Tuesday, observed on the eve of Lent, is traditionally a time of preparation for the 40 days of prayer, fasting and service that follow. Historically, families would use up rich ingredients such as eggs and milk before the Lenten season, giving rise to the custom of sharing pancakes. Across the College, students and staff embraced this tradition while also supporting Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion campaign, raising awareness and funds for communities in need.

On Wednesday, the community gathered for Ash Wednesday, which marks the official beginning of Lent. During a reverent prayer service, students and staff received ashes on their foreheads in the sign of the cross - a symbol of repentance and renewal. The ashes serve as a reminder of the call to turn back to God and to begin the Lenten journey with humility and reflection.

Together, these significant moments have set a reflective and purposeful tone for the weeks ahead, inviting all members of the College to embrace Lent with intention and faith.
