In September 2022, after stepping away from netball post-COVID, Gemma C (Year 11) decided to try something new - boxing. Inspired by her uncle and cousins, she joined a kids' class and quickly progressed, moving into more advanced training groups under her coach’s guidance. Just over a year later, she stepped into the ring for her first official fight in March 2024. Since then, she has already competed ten times. What she enjoys most about boxing is the friendships she’s formed and the chance to travel, meet new people, and explore different places through the sport.
Gemma’s achievements speak for themselves. She has represented the Victorian State Team two years in a row, won silver at the Under 19s National Championships in the Junior 46–48kg division, trained with a kickboxing gym in Italy, and took part in an all-girls boxing trip to Fiji. She was also selected for a development camp at the Australian Institute of Sport and recently competed at the Tri-Nation Tournament with the Victorian Team.
This year's Fiji trip for the Tri-Nation Tournament was a particular highlight. Held in Suva, the capital city, the tournament featured teams from Fiji, Samoa, and Australia and attracted national attention with television and newspaper coverage. Gemma fought twice - winning both bouts - while also immersing herself in Fijian culture. From traditional dances and rituals to meaningful conversations with locals, the experience left a lasting impact and opened her eyes to life beyond the ring.
Representing her club and state has been a proud achievement for Gemma. Looking ahead, she’s preparing to compete in the Under 19s National Championships in Darwin this September, where she’ll enter the Youth 48–51kg division. With every bout, she continues to grow as both an athlete and a young leader in the sport.
The College congratulates Gemma on her outstanding achievements and wishes her every success in the upcoming National Championships and beyond.
Welcome to the spotlight, Gemma!
