Staff Spotlight: Ella McConnell – Head of Learning Diversity and the Stewart Centre

13 May 2025

Ella McConnell is a dedicated educator, leader and community volunteer whose commitment to inclusion, equity and wellbeing is evident in both her professional and volunteer work. As Head of Learning Diversity and The Stewart Centre at John Paul College, she is passionate about creating safe, supportive and empowering environments for all students.

Beyond the College, Ella contributes her expertise to the Sorrento Cricket Club, where she has led several initiatives designed to promote inclusion and strengthen community connections. One of these is Sharks Kids, a junior cricket program created in response to the challenges faced by children during the COVID-19 pandemic. Developed from both educational and community perspectives, the program focuses on wellbeing, safeguarding and belonging – and has seen junior registrations grow by 60%.

To encourage female participation in sport, Ella co-founded the EmpowerHer: Girls Multi-Sport Carnival – a free event inviting girls aged 9–17 to try a range of sports in a welcoming and inclusive environment. The event was a celebration of confidence, community and connection.

Another milestone has been the establishment of Sorrento Cricket Club’s first Senior Women’s team in its 135-year history. Through the Wicket Women’s Project, Ella has worked to remove barriers for women in sport, introducing initiatives such as inclusive uniforms, access to women’s health professionals and a dignity vending machine. The project has also empowered more women to step into leadership roles within the club.

Ella attributes much of her drive and values to the many role models and mentors in her life – including her mother, grandmother, a former principal, colleagues and the women of the “Lady Sharks” team – all of whom have shaped her belief in the power of support, inclusion and challenging the status quo.

The College recognises and celebrates Ella’s outstanding contributions to education and community life, and her ongoing commitment to building equitable and inclusive spaces for all.

Welcome to the spotlight Ella!
