This edition of Student Spotlight shines on Bailey G (Year 10), whose outstanding achievements and unwavering commitment to gymnastics continue to impress.
Bailey’s gymnastics journey began at just 4½ years old, when he first learned the basics of tumbling and balancing. Within a year, his potential was clear, and he was invited to join an all-boys squad, training across all six apparatus. Since then, he has developed into a dedicated athlete, drawn to the discipline the sport demands and fuelled by the strong camaraderie within his team – each member pushing the other to improve.
At the 2024 Australian Gymnastics Championships, Bailey earned a silver medal on Pommel Horse while competing against 47 of the country’s best. It’s a performance he looks back on with pride – one that affirmed the strength of his quiet determination. For Bailey, earning State Team selection is not just a milestone – it’s a reflection of his hard work and consistency.
2025 has already been remarkable. After a strong start with three early-season competitions, Bailey competed in two State Team trial events, placing 3rd All Around in Level 8 Open at both. He also earned multiple top-three finishes across High Bar, Vault, Floor, and Parallel Bars.
At the Senior Victorian Championships, held at the State Netball and Hockey Centre, Bailey was crowned All Around Victorian Champion in Level 8 Open. He also placed 1st in Vault, 2nd in Pommel Horse, High Bar and Parallel Bars, and achieved top-six finishes in Rings and Floor. These results secured his place on the Victorian State Team for the 2025 Australian Gymnastics Championships, held from 3–17 July at the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre.
At this year’s national event, Bailey delivered an outstanding performance in the Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Level 8 Open division. He struck gold on Floor with a score of 12.500 and earned bronze on High Bar with 10.733. His results also contributed to Victoria’s team bronze on Day 1, with additional team medals on High Bar – a strong showing that highlights both his personal talent and his contribution to the team’s overall success.
Known for his calm, focused demeanour, Bailey takes challenges in stride and is quick to reset and move forward when faced with setbacks. Daily training is second nature, driven by a personal desire to refine his skills and perform at his best.
Outside the gym, Bailey stays grounded with the support of his family – especially his 85-year-old Grandad, a fixture at every competition. After long training sessions, he enjoys unwinding with some downtime or online gaming with friends, striking a healthy balance between elite sport and everyday teen life.
Congratulations to Bailey on his remarkable success. His discipline, resilience, and ability to balance high-level competition with academic life are truly inspiring.
Well done, Bailey – the spotlight is yours!
