At John Paul College, every child and young person has the right to feel safe, valued and supported. Creating an inclusive and equitable environment where every student’s individual needs are recognised and respected is a shared responsibility across our College community. As part of Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools’ ongoing Child Safe Standards newsletter series, families are invited to learn more about Child Safe Standard 5 and the important role we all play in promoting equity, inclusion and child safety.
Child Safe Standard 5 focuses on ensuring equity is upheld and diverse needs are respected in both policy and practice. The standard recognises that every child is unique, and schools must create environments where all students are treated with dignity, fairness and respect, regardless of their background, abilities, circumstances or individual needs.
As a Catholic school community, our commitment to child safety is grounded in the Gospel values of justice, inclusion and respect. At the College, this commitment is reflected through practices that recognise and respond to the diverse needs of our students, including listening to student and family perspectives, providing appropriate support, and creating opportunities for all students to participate fully in College life.
Families and carers play an important role in supporting Child Safe Standard 5 by sharing insights about their child’s individual needs, cultural practices or circumstances that may help the College provide the best possible support. Families are also encouraged to participate in school programs and events, provide feedback on policies and practices, and continue conversations with children about respect, inclusion and fairness.
By working together, families, carers, staff and the wider community help strengthen a culture where every child and young person feels a sense of belonging, is treated equitably and has their unique needs recognised and respected.
Parents and carers are encouraged to read the full MACS Parent/Carer Newsletter below to learn more about Child Safe Standard 5 and how schools, families and communities can work together to uphold equity and respect diverse needs in child-safe environments.
