For many students, volunteering provides an opportunity to learn new skills and contribute to the community. For Year 10 student Tina S, volunteering with the Community Companion Food and Outreach Van has been a rewarding experience that has strengthened her understanding of the importance of empathy, connection and service.
Motivated by a desire to support people who may be experiencing hardship, Tina became involved with the program to make a positive difference in her local community while gaining valuable life experience.
Throughout her time volunteering, she has met a diverse range of people and witnessed the impact that simple acts of kindness can have. Whether sharing a conversation, offering support or helping provide a meal, Tina has seen first-hand how community programs can make a meaningful difference in people's lives.
One particularly memorable experience was speaking with a community member who shared how much the service had helped them. Their gratitude reinforced the importance of programs such as the Community Companion Food and Outreach Van and the role volunteers play in supporting those in need.
The experience has also contributed to Tina's personal growth, helping her build confidence, strengthen her communication skills and develop a greater awareness of challenges faced within the community.
Tina encourages other students to consider volunteering, highlighting the opportunity to help others while developing valuable life skills and a deeper appreciation for the importance of giving back.
Her experience is a reminder that community service not only supports those in need but also helps create stronger, more connected communities.
The Community Companion Food and Outreach Van welcomes new volunteers throughout the year. Students in Year 10 and above are encouraged to get involved and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, with parents and carers also warmly invited to volunteer alongside them.
The program also relies on the generosity of the College and wider community, and donations of food (staple pantry items), essential items and financial contributions are always appreciated. Every donation helps support those experiencing hardship and ensures the van can continue providing practical assistance and a friendly connection to those in need.
