Welcoming the Year Ahead at the 2026 Opening Assembly

05 February 2026

The College community came together for the 2026 Opening of the School Year Assembly – a little differently this year, with the event live streamed into classrooms while refurbishment works continue in the Kealy Centre.

Although we weren’t all physically together, the sense of community was strong. The Assembly warmly welcomed new Year 7 students, new staff, and families, and officially presented our Year 9 and Year 12 student leaders for 2026. The Year 12 Class of 2026 was also acknowledged as the leaders of the College, ready to guide and inspire their peers throughout the year.

The Assembly celebrated the exceptional achievements of the Class of 2025. VCE and Vocational Major results were highlighted, including 2025 College Dux Sahara Liyanawaduge (ATAR 98.65), College Proxime Accessit Anabelle Blewitt (ATAR 98.00), and Vocational Major Dux Jake Browne. Sahara shared a heartfelt message, reflecting on the challenges of Year 12 and offering advice to her peers. She encouraged students to persevere through setbacks, embrace feedback, and seek guidance from teachers. She also emphasised the importance of support from family and friends, and reminded students that resilience, determination, and consistent effort are the keys to both academic and personal success.

The College Captains introduced the 2026 theme, “Alone we leave footprints, together we leave a path.” Inspired by our students’ trip to Central Australia, the theme symbolises how individual actions, skills, and strengths combine to create a lasting impact when we work together as a community. It serves as a reminder that while each of us takes different steps, progress is greatest when we support and guide one another along the way.

The Assembly marked a meaningful start to the school year, celebrating achievement, leadership, and the spirit of community that defines John Paul College. Students, staff, and families were reminded that 2026 is an opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute together - leaving a path that reflects the collective strength and commitment of the College community.
