Year 12 Retreat inspires reflection

18 June 2025

As part of the Religious Education program at John Paul College, all Year 12 students recently took part in a two-day Retreat focused on the theme of Identity. A long-standing tradition at the College, the Retreat offers students an important opportunity to pause, reflect, and prepare for the final stages of their secondary schooling.

Held in House groups at peaceful rural venues, the Retreat included a range of reflective and creative activities such as meditation, prayer, painting, journaling, walking, team building and letter writing. Students were encouraged to explore their values, deepen their sense of self, and strengthen their connection to others and to their faith.

The Year 12 Retreat was a wonderful chance to reconnect as a cohort and take time away from daily stresses. As part of Turner House, my group stayed at Grantville Lodge, which had cosy lodgings, beautiful scenery and cute animals. Despite the cold, the atmosphere of the trip was exceedingly warm and comforting.

A key moment of the Retreat was the chance for students to read letters written by their Year 7 selves, alongside personal messages from family members. These emotional reflections helped students appreciate their growth and the support of loved ones.

The atmosphere across all venues was one of warmth, gratitude and connection. Staff thoughtfully planned activities that supported personal reflection, group bonding and spiritual growth.

I can confidently say, and I’m sure the Year 12 cohort will agree, that this Retreat has been one of my highlights of Year 12 so far and has enabled me to strengthen connections, relax and reset for the remainder of the year.

The College looks forward to seeing students carry the insights and renewed sense of purpose from the Retreat into their final semester.
