USA Arts Tour Inspires Creative Futures

19 May 2026

Students from Years 11 and 12 recently returned from an unforgettable USA Arts Tour, immersing themselves in the creative heart of New York and Los Angeles. The experience combined industry-based workshops, iconic cultural landmarks and live performances, offering students a deeper understanding of the global arts landscape.

Across the tour, students engaged in a range of hands-on learning experiences. Highlights included Broadway workshops, a graffiti art session in Brooklyn and a “Make a Movie” workshop, where students worked collaboratively to film and produce their own scenes using professional equipment. These opportunities allowed students to explore potential career pathways and develop practical skills in real-world settings.

Year 11 student Luka K described the experience as eye-opening, particularly the chance to step into the role of Director of Photography during the filmmaking workshop. This hands-on experience strengthened his passion for cinematography and provided valuable insight into the demands of the industry. He also reflected on visits to major cultural sites and studios, noting how they revealed the scale and creativity behind American media production.

This trip is highly beneficial in showing you what it is like in those careers and gives you a better perspective on how they function.

The tour also showcased some of the world’s most iconic arts destinations. Students attended Broadway performances, explored Times Square, walked across the Brooklyn Bridge and visited renowned institutions including the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures and the GRAMMY Museum. A behind-the-scenes tour of NBC Studios further highlighted the processes involved in producing and distributing global media.

For Year 11 student Abigail A, visiting the Met and MoMA was a standout experience. With a strong interest in art and art history, seeing significant works up close deepened her appreciation for artistic practice and prompted reflection on how creativity allows individuals to leave a lasting mark. She also found that being far from home strengthened the connections within the group, creating bonds that were especially meaningful.

This trip was more than just sightseeing. Seeing artworks I’ve studied up close deepened my passion for art, and the connections we formed made the experience even more meaningful.

For Year 12 student Miranda M, experiencing Broadway was a standout moment. Seeing live performances with original cast members brought the magic of musical theatre to life, while the vibrant atmosphere of New York left a lasting impression. She also reflected on the friendships formed throughout the trip and the way the experience broadened her perspective on opportunities within the arts.

This trip widened my horizons of what’s possible in the arts beyond what we have in Melbourne.

Beyond the structured program, the tour fostered independence, collaboration and lasting connections among students. From shared experiences in workshops to exploring world-famous landmarks together, the group created memories that will endure well beyond the classroom.
