The innovative Time & Space program brought together Year 8 students and their fathers or male mentors for a dedicated evening of connection and reflection. Designed to create space for open dialogue, the evening invited families to pause and acknowledge the journey to this point, while exploring the opportunities and challenges of the teenage years.
Through small group discussions and one-on-one conversations, students and mentors engaged in honest and thoughtful exchanges. A particularly meaningful element of the evening was the sharing of a treasured item symbolising each relationship – from early childhood mementos to photos and awards – sparking genuine and heartfelt conversations.
I think it was a good time to open up and talk to one another… I got to know Dad more.
For many students, the experience strengthened understanding and deepened connection.
It was fun and made me and my dad closer… I understand better how my dad thought because of other dads.
Others reflected on the confidence gained from being able to speak openly.
It was a space I could feel myself and really express myself… a great confidence booster.
Parents and mentors also spoke highly of the evening, valuing the opportunity to have conversations that don’t often happen in the busyness of daily life.
We spoke about things we don’t talk about day to day… a special bonding experience.
Many were impressed by the openness and maturity shown by the students.
It was a real eye opener how open and articulate they were. I really enjoyed it.
The Time & Space program provided a powerful reminder of the importance of creating intentional opportunities for connection, reflection and shared understanding during the adolescent years.
