Exploring the heart of Australia

23 October 2025

At the end of last term and into the term break, a group of students embarked on an unforgettable adventure through Central Australia. The journey began in Alice Springs, where students explored the stunning Western MacDonnell Ranges, visited Simpsons Gap and Stanley Chasm, and enjoyed a breathtaking star show under the desert sky.

Every day was a whole different experience, with activities ranging from hiking through canyons to watching sunrises and sunsets. The scenery was incredible everywhere we went.

At Lilla, students were warmly welcomed by the local Luritja people and took part in a range of cultural activities, including guided walks through sacred sites and learning about the deep spiritual connection the Luritja people share with the land. The group also experienced the awe-inspiring Kings Canyon, where towering red cliffs and expansive desert views provided unforgettable moments.

Every time we stopped, we had five minutes of silence. It gave us a chance to take in how unique the landscape was.

Throughout the journey, students deepened their understanding of Indigenous culture and history.

I really enjoyed learning about Indigenous culture and hearing the stories connected to the land. It made me appreciate how much history and meaning is held in the places we visited.

The trip ultimately provided students with lasting memories, deeper cultural understanding, and a renewed appreciation for Australia’s unique landscape.

It was a chance to step out of our comfort zones, bond with friends, and see a part of Australia that’s completely different from home. It’s something I’ll never forget.
