Events 
Aim: The
aim of the project is to (a) develop an understanding of the Science
curriculum and its objectives in the transition years from 5-8; and
(b) to make the transition from Primary to Secondary more streamlined
and effective and in particular in the area of Science.
Objectives: The
objectives of the program include …
- A means of beginning
to develop the Science KLA component of the Primary curriculum from
5-8 in the light of Science covered at John Paul College;
- Developing an
understanding of some different scientific techniques that can be
employed at the Primary level in the area of experimentation;
- Identification
of equipment used at John Paul College that would be suitable for
Primary;
- Science topics
and programs that Grade 6 could be brought to John Paul College to
experience;
- Shared activities
and programs that partner Primary classes and Secondary Science classes
can work together in developing;
- Promotion of
the "Cross Campus Science Course" for developing Science
activities, topics, assessment ideas and projects that all partner
Primary schools and John Paul College can engage in.
Costing: The
Science Mentor Program budget will cover costs for 2 days CRT replacement
for pairs of partner Primary staff from each of our partner schools
to visit John Paul College (total of 14 days CRT).
Program Details:
The program involves a single day for 2 staff members from the same
partner Primary school to visit the Science department at John Paul
College for the day. They will have opportunity to …
- take part in
the regular Science program of the school by assisting and participating
in Science practical activities;
- be provided with
a timetable of possible Science classes to visit and they may choose
which one or all to visit;
- take note of
the curriculum covered by the Science department including 7-10 Science
and senior Science classes (Physics, Chemistry, Environmental Science,
Psychology and Biology);
- take note of
assessment procedures, excursions, projects and general procedures
for Science at John Paul College;
experience any of the year 10 Science electives: , Biological Sciences;
Chemical Sciences; Environmental and Earth Sciences;
Physical Sciences and Robolab.
- make use of the
Science Mentor Program digital camera to take photos on classes they
experience in order have a Powerpoint presentation prepared prior
to leaving for the day (this will be useful for debriefing back at
a Primary staff meeting).
Day program:
The day will be broken up according to …
1. An introductory
session in the morning with the Science Mentor Program coordinator to
discuss the general Science program at John Paul College. It will cover
…
- The 7-10 Science
course;
- Science procedures
and practice;
- Methods of assessment,
major practical reports and research assignments;
- Excursions from
7-10;
- The year 10 electives;
- Explanation of
timetable and map of the school for class visits to classes that teachers
are comfortable with;
- The general curriculum
at 7-8 for John Paul College in other KLA areas;
- Some basic Science
techniques and equipment that might be useful for their classes;
- The use of the
digital camera;
2. The remainder
of the day they may follow the timetable and map into any or all of
the available Science classes throughout the Science department and
take part in the class activities.
3. Possibly time
to visit other KLA in period 5 or 6 to experience other facets of life
at John Paul College.
Debriefing: The
preparation and use of the Powerpoint presentation of the Scisperience
day back at the Primary school should allow for discussion of the Science
curriculum covered in the senior Primary school with an emphasis on
developing a more uniform transition of Science from 5-8. Primary schools
are encouraged to assess their Primary curriculum in the light of the
information they acquire from the visit.
