"Visual Illusions" Return to list of pracs

Aim: This activity is demonstrate visual illusions.

Handout: Visual Illusions

Method: Use the visual illusions handout to discover some things about visual illusions.

Background knowledge: The first picture is a picture of Jesus (upside down). Cover the left and right sections of the picture and in the middle is the head of Jesus. The worded passage is a way of discovering that as we learn to read, we get faster because we begin to recognise words from the shape of the word which is triggered by the first letter of the word. Count how many "f's" there are in the passage ... students might forget to count the "of's" etc since they do NOT start with an "f". The picture of the woman is both an old lady and a young lady (the chin of the young lady is the nose of the old lady).
