"Erosion" Return to list of pracs

Aim: This activity to demonstrate the effect of soil erosion.

Equipment: The equipment you need is...  

• a set of 4 trays with soil in them;
• bucket or cups of water.

Method: Four trays of identical soil with irrigation channelling marked into the soil according to the following...

No irrigation channels	Length wise irrigation	Resistance irrigation	Grooved irrigation

Using the cups or containers of water and pouring from the back of the trays at the same flow rate make observations about the amount of soil that dislodges over the front end of the trays.

Background knowledge: Investigate the amount of soil dislodged. You might find the length-wise irrigation might lose most soil and the resistance irrigation loses least.
