"Making a Water Well" Return to list of pracs

Aim: This activity is used to investigate the operation of water in a water well.

Equipment: The equipment includes...

  • water container;
  • water;
  • gravel or stones ;
  • straw.

Method: Place a draw down into a container. Fill the container with gravel to a mark about two thirds of the way up its side surrounding the straw. Fill the container with water and note the amount of water in the straw as it begins to fill up.

Background knowledge: The level of the water in the straw fills up to a point called the water table. As the level of water in the water table drops the level of water in the "well" will also drop.
