"Model Building" Return to list of pracs

Aim: This is an activity to use imagination to construct a purposeful model using a limited amount of material.

Equipment: The equipment includes...  

  • 5 sheets of A4 paper;
  • 0.5 metres of masking tape;
  • 3 empty film cannisters;
  • 5 coloured textas;
  • 40cm of white cotton;
  • 15 icy pole sticks;
  • 1 pair of scissors;
  • 1 plastic cup;
  • 14 match sticks.

Method: Using some or all the equipment above students are to construct in pairs a free standing model that performs a certain function. Some examples could be...

  • a crane;
  • a castle;
  • a car;
  • a dog kennel;
  • a policeman;
  • a rescue of a cat caught up in a 3 metre tree.

Background knowledge: A range of ideas could be used with this activity. It is up to you what task you set.
