Can we survive without water?
Return to Curriculum

Most scientific research shows that all life requires water to survive. Some microscopic creatures have been found to exist where there is little or no water and respond to silicon for some reason. But they have not been proven correct yet. There has been microscopic creatures found living under the surface of some of the driest planets in our solar system. They lay there dormant and when water is placed on them they come "back to life" to some extent and start growing again.

Human beings require water without question. Without it we would die. It is vital for respiration and the production of energy within our bodies. Nevertheless, humans have found very clever ways of preventing water loss. Through our behaviour (wearing clothes, keeping out of sun during the day etc) we are the only creature on the earth to be able to live in any extremes of weather on the Earth's surface from deserts to the Antartica.
